Farm Fresh FAQ

How do you pick blueberries?

Be gentle. Roll the berries between your thumb and the palm of your hand, and the ripe ones will easily fall off. Choose the largest dark blue berries with a nice bloom. Berries that are partially red are not quite ripe and will be tart. Be sure to check all parts of the bush as some of the best clusters of plump, ripe berries are on found on the undersides of the branches.

How do you store blueberries?

Refrigerate blueberries in a covered container. Rinse immediately before use; do not store wet. To freeze blueberries, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1-2 hours. Transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag for storage. They will keep for 6 months. Rinse frozen blueberries before use. Alternatively, they can be washed before freezing, but be sure to dry them well.

What kind of blueberries do you have for U-Pick?

The U-pick variety is Star. We also grow Duke, Draper, Legacy, Ozark Blue, Emerald and Jewel varieties. Star is a Southern highbush variety that grows well in this region. Northern highbush varieties need more winter chilling. Lowbush, or wild, blueberries need much colder winter weather.
